Snapper are attracted by the berley hanging off the back of the boat and the vibration of the fighting kahawai.Catching kahawai is the perfect way to learn angling skills. I'm always amazed at the number of fishermen who point the rod at the fish, lock up the reel's drag so it can't budge a centimetre, and crank the fish in with the reel. They are the first to complain when the fish breaks the line and gets away, or the reel craps out, or in some extreme cases, the rod breaks. So if you're learning angling skills, the first lesson should be having the reel's drag set to pull free at the line weight. That means if you have 10kg line on your reel, with 10kg pressure on the reel, the spool should be able to turn freely but under pressure.
