Kaikoura Trumpeter

Kaikoura Trumpeter

Kaikoura has a reputation for doing things on a grand scale. There are the legendary crayfish after which the region was named, the nursery of female and juvenile sperm whales and the majestic Kaikoura ranges that form a mighty backdrop to this thin ribbon of coastline. In fact, everything is big around Kaikoura, from a bustling tourism industry to the succulent paua that can be plucked metres from where you park the car.

Now Kaikoura is about to become more famous for another denizen of the deep - trumpeter. These spectacular fish are very territorial and a popular target species for fishers fishing the Kaikoura coast. Catches of big trumpeter are not uncommon, but they seldom come packaged as big as this mother, caught by Dave Williamson while fishing aboard Victoria Lee Charters with skipper Dean Sutherland. But wait, there's more ... oh, to hell with it - you'll have to turn to page 13 of our Canterbury Edition January 2008 Issue to find out more!
